Belay devices have really moved on from the days of the painful waist belay.
These days a standard belay device is one that can cover many situations - double or single rope belaying and abseiling.
They are an essential piece of kit if you intend to climb outdoors on trad routes, although many can also be used indoors so they are a good purchase even if you're not sure what sort of climbing you will eventually do.
If you only intend to climb indoors or on sport routes then there are a number of self locking or semi automatic devices available.
