1993 three climbers met and hatched a plan to build a climbing wall. One climber had the capital, one climber had the skills to build the wall and the other had found the perfect building for the Kendal Wall, the old Milk Drying Plant in Kendal.
By mid 1995 their dream evolved when the old Milk Drying Plant was converted into climbing wall and named the Lakeland Climbing Centre. The doors were opened to the new Kendal Wall in December 1995.
In 1996 the Main Wall was added at a height of 18.5 m and by the late 1990’s the Kendal Wall had gained recognition for its quality of climbing and was ranked in the BMC's top 3 in England. For 14 years the Lakeland Climbing Centre grew steadily and developed a loyal and supportive customer base of climbers who appreciated having a major indoor climbing wall in an area of relatively low population. The Centre has also enjoyed group use from local outdoor centres as well as trade from tourists and seasonal visitors.
2010 A massive new development was started to extend the Climbing Centre and increase the range of facilities and activities on offer. We have added a dedicated training room, a family-friendly room for beginners to intermediate climbers (The Den), two new bouldering rooms (The Marmot Loft and The Green Room), an extension to the existing 18m high Main Wall to make it the tallest in England once again (25m), a brand new 20m high multi facetted vertical wall (the King Kong Wall), a new Reception area with Kendal Wall Shop and Creamery Cafe and two meeting rooms to allow us to extend the scope of our services to include yoga classes, catered birthday parties, conference facilities and social functions.
A further phase will be completed by summer 2013 and will include the addition of a spectacular indoor Via Ferrata, aerial activities and an upgrade for the Chamber.
Kate Phillips (Managing Director)
Since 1983 I have enjoyed a varied life of climbing from bouldering in the Peak District to Himalayan adventures. My highlights include the Senate House leap at Cambridge, the first British ascent of Ama Dablam, attempting new routes on 7000m+ peaks, on-sight of 7a sports climbs in Spain, chalk cliff climbing at Dover, ice climbing in Scotland and endless sunny (!) days enjoying fabulous traditional climbing on our stunning inland crags and sea cliffs. My latest big adventure has been to enter the world of parenting and I really appreciate the benefits of maintaining my climbing fitness on our superb Wall which I have been managing since 1995. I have recently taken up mountain biking and open water swimming and it's great to be learning new skills, but I am just as happy enjoying a good day out walking the fells with my dog Jess and my son Joe.

Tom Hull (Wall Facilities Manager)
I have been a duty manager at the Kendal Wall since February 2008, I am part of the instructing team and I organise the route setting. I have been climbing since I was 18, graduated in Outdoor Studies in 2006 and have previously worked with The Princes Trust Team Programme. I am extremely passionate about climbing and if you don’t see me behind the reception desk I am usually on the Wall or out cragging somewhere in the Lake District.
Matt Harris (Duty Manager)
I have worked at the Wall since November 2008. I enjoy rock climbing, running and seeing new places.
Andrea King (Office and Corporate Events Manager)
My role of office manager and corporate events co-ordinator offers me a new, fresh and exciting challenge and the opportunity to learn another new sport! Having had 15 years experience as a PA and 4 years as the General Manager of an Activity Centre specialising in corporate events, I have the experience, enthusiasm and knowledge to deliver tailor made corporate, team building, group, school, family and stag and hen events. I thrive on new challenges and I am really looking forward to welcoming new customers to the Centre and designing and planning new and exciting events to suit their requirements. I am extremely fortunate to be able to see the progression, energy and creativity currently being generated by the new spectacular development. It is such an exciting stage in the life of the Kendal Wall!
