Quickdraws
Whether you are a trad climber, sport climber, alpinist or mountaineer, you will always need quickdraws. For the indoor climber, they are the only part of a 'rack' that you will really need.
A quickdraw is made up of two karabiners joined together by a short nylon or Dyneema sling, which is used as a link between the climber's rope and protection (cam, bolt, peg or nut).
The number of quickdraws required varies. At the Kendal Wall you will need 6 quickdraws at most, whereas out on the crags you will need about 10. The number required for sport routes varies enormously from 3 to more than 20 for some of the 40m sport pitches around Europe.
Quickdraws come in varying lengths, some with solid gates others with wire gates, bent gates or straight gates. If you know what you're looking for it's…

In general for sport climbing the main length of a quickdraw is 10/12cm, but it can be practical to mix up the lengths a little to ensure the rope always runs cleanly, eg for a long route: 8 x 10cm quickdraws, 4 x 15cm quickdraws, and 2 x 20cm quickdraws.
For trad climbing, you need a mix of quickdraws with more longer ones due to convoluted routes, which require longer slings to allow your ropes to run cleanly.
Often with solid gate quickdraws the protection end has a straight gate and the rope end has a bent gate. This is because it is easier to clip the rope into a bent gate and it reminds you to always use one karabiner for the protection end and the bent gate for the rope end.
It is also good practice to use the same karabiner for the protection end as, when sport climbing, the bolts will often burr the angle of the karabiner causing rough bits that could damage your rope.
Wire gate karabiners offer a weight saving; most have a straight gate but the rope end will be held tightly in place by a rubber grommet, so you can always tell the difference.
Happy cranking!
